Variations in Lesson Planning!

August 1, 2017

Rethink your lesson planning style!

Begin to build and create a repertoire of curriculum items!

When it's time to lesson plan... pick and choose which curriculum items from your repertoire best fits the needs of your students!

Each school year is different, each class is different, and each student is different!  As a result, those lesson plans should also be different year to year or class to class.

I know...at this point...some of you are reacting with

      (1) YES...celebrate that diversity and meet the needs of students!

      OR

      (2)  "I still want to have a life, and  I don't have time for all of this" panic attack.

Yes, there is diversity, and yes, we want to meet the needs of our students.  Hold the panic attack.

Goal #1: Build a repertoire of curriculum items that can be used for each topic.  This can be lesson plans from the textbook or curriculum purchased by the district, shared lessons with other teacher, and curriculum you create yourself.

Goal #2: For each school year or even each class vary up those lesson plans by picking and choosing different items from your curriculum repertoire.

Change the way you view curriculum.  Instead of focusing on building that one great curriculum, focus on building a fantastic repertoire with great pieces (meaning activities/assignments).  With a repertoire of curriculum for each topic, you can easily create and rearranged varied lesson plans stress free and at the drop of a hat.

For example:

In the Chemistry with Confidence Curriculum, the following items are available when teaching about the History or Discovery of the Atom.

Not all of the History of the Atom items are necessary to teach the topic.  You as the teacher should choose which items best fit your classroom.  Using this curriculum, you can easily rearrange the items to create different lesson plans that fit the needs of your students.  Four possible lesson plans using this curriculum are listed below.  Each lesson plan teaches the same concept with different variations.
